ServicesFinal Expense Insurance
Final Expense Insurance in Houston
Final expense insurance is permanent life coverage with a modest face amount, meant for a funeral, burial or cremation and the last bills that follow. We price what your arrangements would cost and check your health answers first, so the policy type and amount fit before you apply.

What final expense coverage does, and when it fits
A final expense policy is permanent whole life coverage with a small face amount. It is usually chosen to cover a funeral service, a plot or cremation, a headstone and a last medical bill or credit card balance. Premiums stay level, the coverage does not expire at a set age, and the policy builds a modest cash value. Your beneficiary receives the money directly.
It is often the right call for clients in their 50s through 80s across Houston who want something in place without buying a large policy, or who were turned down or priced out elsewhere. If you still carry a mortgage or have children depending on your income, term life insurance or mortgage protection insurance may do that job better, and we will tell you so.
The most common mistake we see is a guaranteed issue policy, with its two-year waiting period, bought by someone whose health would have qualified for full coverage from day one. That is why we look at the health questions before we look at prices.

What we cover in a final expense review
- 01
A cost estimate for your arrangements
We walk through the choices that drive funeral cost: burial or cremation, viewing, casket or urn, cemetery plot and opening fees. The face amount comes from that list, not from a round number.
- 02
A check of coverage you already hold
Many clients already have an old whole life policy, group coverage from work or a prepaid funeral contract. We read what you have so you are not paying twice for the same expense.
- 03
Matching you to the right benefit type
Final expense policies come in level, graded and guaranteed issue versions. We go through the carrier's health questions with you, including recent hospital stays, oxygen use or insulin, to see which version your answers support.
- 04
Primary and contingent beneficiaries
Your policy lists a primary beneficiary plus a contingent one, so the proceeds still reach someone you chose if your first pick passes away before you. If the funeral home should be paid straight from the policy, we explain how an assignment of benefits works.
- 05
Side-by-side quotes
You see monthly premiums for more than one face amount, with the waiting period and any rider spelled out for each.
Questions about Final Expense Insurance?
Call(713) 328-4625Signs a final expense policy belongs in your plans
No funeral money set aside
With no policy or savings earmarked, a spouse or grown children cover the funeral bill themselves, usually within days and long before an estate is settled.
Your term policy is ending
Term life often expires in your 60s or 70s. Renewal rates at that point usually climb steeply, while a modest permanent policy keeps one fixed premium for life.
You were declined for larger coverage
A health history that blocked a fully underwritten policy can still qualify for a simplified issue or graded final expense plan.
Your policy has a waiting period you didn't expect
Coverage bought by mail or from a TV ad is often a graded or guaranteed issue plan. Your current health answers may qualify you for level coverage instead.
You prepaid a funeral years ago
Prepaid contracts sometimes cover the service but not the cemetery, flowers or obituary. A small policy can fill that gap.
How a final expense consultation runs
- 1
A phone conversation about your plans
We ask what kind of service you want and what coverage you already hold. Most of this is settled in one call.
- 2
Health questions before quotes
We go through the same yes-or-no questions the carrier will ask. Answering them accurately up front helps keep a claim from being challenged during the policy's contestability period.
- 3
Quotes compared
We lay out level, graded and guaranteed issue options where they apply, with the face amount and premium for each, and explain which one your answers point to.
- 4
Application and policy review
Most final expense applications are short and skip the medical exam. When the carrier sends the issued contract, we read through it together and confirm each beneficiary name is spelled exactly right.
What moves the price of a final expense policy
Carriers set final expense premiums from a few inputs, and none of them are a mystery. Once we know your age, your health answers and the amount you need, the quotes become predictable. We explain each factor before you choose.
- Age at application
- Your premium is locked at the age you buy. Each birthday you wait raises the rate for the life of the policy.
- Health class
- Level benefit plans cost less than graded or guaranteed issue plans because the carrier takes on less unknown risk. Tobacco use also raises the rate.
- Face amount
- Coverage sized to a cremation carries a smaller premium than coverage sized to a full burial with a plot. Matching the amount to your real plans keeps you from overpaying.
- Riders
- Options such as an accidental death rider add cost. We point out the riders that fit what you are trying to cover and the ones that add little for you.
Final expense insurance questions
Do I need a medical exam?
Usually not. Most final expense policies use a short health questionnaire and a prescription history check instead of blood work or a nurse visit. Your answers decide which benefit type you qualify for.
What is a graded benefit?
A graded policy pays a partial amount, or a return of premiums plus interest, if death from illness happens in the first two years. After that, the full face amount is paid. Accidental death is often covered in full from the start, but terms vary by carrier, so we read them with you.
Can my beneficiary use the money for anything?
Yes. The beneficiary receives the proceeds and decides how to spend them, whether that is the funeral, a medical bill or travel for family. If you want the funeral provider paid directly, an assignment can handle that.
Is final expense insurance different from whole life?
Final expense is whole life coverage scaled down: a lower face amount and a shorter application, usually with no exam. If you want a larger permanent policy that builds more cash value, our whole life insurance page covers that option.
How long does approval take?
It depends on the carrier and the underwriting type. Simplified issue applications often move faster than fully underwritten policies because there is no exam, though some carriers still review records before deciding. We tell you what to expect from the carrier you choose.
